Clean energy organizations DER Task Force and SOLARPUNKS are teaming up with our friends at AdHoc to throw an entirely solar powered music festival. New Energy is a sequel, of sorts, to last year’s solar powered Brooklyn show, and it happens on Saturday, October 18 at Governors Island‘s Parade Ground. The lineup includes Eartheater, Junglepussy, Doss, GIFT, and Ivan Berko.

“After last year’s successful proof of concept, we’re thrilled to officially launch New Energy, the solar-powered music festival,” DERTF’s James McGinniss says. “While there are still challenges for the industry to achieve 100% solar-powered festivals, we want people to realize that if we can do it, they can too. There’s so much doomerism and blackpilling about the climate and our ability to shift away from fossil fuels. Everything about New Energy’s vibe and curation is aimed to inject a different kind of energy into the world — one that says the future is actually going to be awesome.”

“The name New Energy has a double meaning, and we’re echoing the forward-thinking ethos of the overall event in our music curation,” organizer Ryan Leas adds. “Building upon the groundwork laid last year, we want to feature artists on the rise and on the bleeding edge — both sonically and thematically reshaping our present while plotting a course towards a future we can’t see yet. Deploying and Orchestrating GWs of Distributed Capacity

It’s time to transition from hype to happening.

Ever since the term Virtual Power Plant was coined about a decade ago, many have felt they’ve been overhyped. Frankly, that might be right.

But over the last 18 months, we’ve seen something change. For the first time, utilities and grid operators seem to asking for VPPs. The industry used to beg for permission to participate, but its now accepting invitations.

Aggregating and dispatching DERs used to be about offering emergency capacity, or maybe some economic optimization on the margin. Compare that to today, where this asset class is being deployed to meet load growth.

Utilities are short capacity and need all the help they can get. Gas plants aren’t easy to build these days, nuclear takes forever, and grid-scale solar and wind are deployable but need firming/flexibility. And it turns out, a properly managed VPP can at times be even more valuable than a traditional power plant.

VPPs have graduated from nice-to-have to must-have.

Ryan Long, Executive Vice President at Xcel Energy, led a distributed capacity procurement in his previous role as the President of Xcel Energy for the Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota service territories. Under this model, Xcel will procure and operate DERs as a part of their planning process, to meet resource adequacy and improve system reliability. Seth Frader-Thompson, Co-Founder and CEO of EnergyHub, has quietly built what we believe is the largest VPP in the country. And they’ve done it with zero hype. And interestingly, despite talk about VPPs often being hyper market oriented, EnergyHub’s customer base is 90%+ within vertically-integrated utilities. Permissionless DERs Wait for No One

This new category promises to put the power in your hands.

The very early days of distributed solar often fell into the “guerrilla solar” bucket. Enterprising home owners, indoor pot farms, and anyone else who wanted to reduce their power bill or hide their electricity consumption might mount solar on their roof, wire it into their panel, and let the meter spin backwards without telling their utility.

One of our favorite examples of this was the original Energy Task Force in NYC, who put an old wind turbine on top of their Lower East Side co-op, got sued by the monopoly utility, and ended up charting a legal path for distributed energy that culminated in PURPA being signed.

While it spurred tons of innovation and we are grateful for these pioneers, this approach was not scalable. Paralleling your own power source with the grid without the appropriate protections processes could put the power system and its staff at risk.

With that in mind, the last 25 years of mainstream distributed energy project development have involved lengthy permitting and utility interconnection processes. While these things serve their purposes, this established a highly permissioned structure for DERs to operate within. Timelines move slowly as they bounce between different authorities. Projects undergo rounds of design revisions in attempt to gain permission. Many customers get frustrated with the timelines and drop off, raising the soft costs of the installer.

What if there was another way? What if you didn’t need to beg for permission to make or store your own power? What if a complicated project sale was simplified into an easy product or service experience? And all of this would be done while still ensuring safety.

A new category of Permissionless DERs promise this. By virtue of their architecture, they don’t require all or some of those authorities to sign off, and some don’t even need professional installers. There are many different types, from plug and play solar like Germany’s (and now Utah’s) well known approach, to batteries that sit in your home like a beautiful appliance, to electrical devices that integrate batteries natively, to on-demand commercial and industrial power systems that can get you up and running in days rather than years.

Permissionless DERs are here and they don’t wait for anyone.

Cole Ashman, Founder & CEO of Pila Energy, is a former Tesla engineer who’s team is building the future of plug and play batteries. Pila’s sleek batteries are meant to be plugged in at the device level, offering backup power, energy shifting, and more. Cole recently appeared on the DER Task Force podcast shortly after he launched the product.

Bala Ramamurthy, Co-Founder and CEO of Critical Loop, previously held a key leader at SpaceX, where he led the development of the human-rated Falcon 9 rocket, playing a pivotal role in the United States' return to human spaceflight. Bala is bringing his experience in developing mission critical hardware and software to on-demand power systems for commercial and industrial facilities.

Stephan Scherer, co-founder of Craftstrom Solar, wants anyone with a standard power socket and a wifi connection to be able to easily install solar and batteries. Their suite of solar panel, inverter, battery, and smart breaker products promise to make solar a simple product purchase that anyone can self-install.

Kevin Chou, Co-founder & Executive Director of Brightsaver, leads a nonprofit with the mission to make solar energy and battery storage accessible to everyone. They work to build a future where clean, affordable energy is in everyone’s hands, and everyday people, no matter their income or address, can power their own lives, save money, and lead the shift to a more sustainable world.

Big DERs Energy (BDE)

Co-located DERs are enabling massive data center growth.

Many analysts confidently proclaim that today’s moment, where AI data centers are being powered by on-site systems, is just the fleeting expression of several unfortunately timed constraints. The distributed energy folks are going to have their fun for a few years, but soon enough the grid and its institutions will remember how to expand, at which point things will go back to normal.

What if that’s not true? What if it was always the destiny for large new loads to be powered by, or at least enabled by, on-site power systems? Up until last year, electricity demand hadn’t grown in the US for nearly a quarter-century. And our last big wave of growth happened well before that, at a time when power generation technology and the electric stack were less mature.

Things couldn’t be more different today. We have massive solar and battery manufacturing capacity that is deployed to projects quickly and at low cost. We have natural gas prime movers that are standardized, modular, and highly performant. We have sophisticated controls and power distribution hardware that command Odin’s spark in ways never seen before.

And despite the common assertion that data centers require 100% capacity factors, it appears even these large new loads themselves may act as distributed energy resources, flexing their might when it matters most.

What if things wont return to normal? What if THIS is the new normal?

Cully Cavness, Co-Founder & COO of Crusoe, and his team are building the Stargate effort for OpenAI — a series of truly massive data center campuses in Texas and elsewhere that will be powered by gas turbines, batteries, solar, wind, and the grid.

Hallie Carrao, of Google’s Advanced Energy Labs, leads how DERs can be integrated into Google’s immense data center fleet, in addition to how the data centers themselves can be used as DERs.

Sean Jones, Tesla’s lead for Megapack at Data Centers, was hands on at xAI’s installation of large-scale battery storage that made the AI super computer known as Colossus possible, and has been leading Tesla’s efforts to educate data center operators, power system operators, and regulators about the value of co-located batteries at data centers.

Tyler Norris, James B. Duke Fellow at Duke University, recently co-authored Rethinking Load Growth: Assessing the Potential for Integration of Large Flexible Loads in US Power Systems, which demonstrates that AI data center growth may be accommodated via load flexibility. Since its release, Tyler’s insights have driven the load growth discourse, both on the load and generator interconnection side.

Duncan Campbell, co-host of DER Task Force and VP of Data Center Solutions at Scale Microgrids, will moderate the panel. Alongside Stripe and Paces, Duncan recently co-authored Fast, scalable, clean, and cheap enough, a white paper that explored how off-grid microgrids with high penetrations of solar can enable data center growth.

Getting to Governors Island requires taking a super quick ferry ride either from Fidi or from Brooklyn.

If you want to be there for the Kickoff at 9am, make sure you’re on the 8:15am (8:30 at the latest!) ferry from FiDi (10 minute ferry, 10 minute walk to DERVOS, 10 mins to register and settle) or the 8:22am ferry from RedHook.

As for leaving, ferries to FiDi leave every 30 minutes, with the last ferry at 11pm. But if you want to take the Brooklyn ferry, you’ll need to catch the 5:47..
