Announcements + Updates
In case you missed it, a new podcast episode dropped at the start of this month covering the history of net energy metering (NEM) in California and the implications of the controversial new NEM proposal from the CPUC. The episode is linked here and can also be found on most podcast platforms.
Our next meetup is scheduled for Wednesday, February 2 at 5pm ET / 2pm PT with Dana Guernsey, co-founder and Chief Product Officer at Voltus. The company recently announced it would go public via special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in the first half of 2022. Sign up for the event here - we’re looking forward to hosting Dana!
We’ve still got sweatshirts! If you’re looking for a cozy and DER-centric way to kick-off your New Year, check out our swag here.

FERC Order 2222
Allison Bates Wannop, DER Task Force member and Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs at Voltus, raised the need for greater participation from DERs companies and interest groups with respect to how ISOs and RTOs interpret and implement the FERC Order 2222. Her firm Voltus submitted a petition to FERC asking for the convening of a technical conference on Order 2222 compliance and implementation across all ISOs, and FERC responded by issuing a request for comments on the petition. If you or any organizations you are involved with support a technical conference about ISO and RTO compliance plans with Order 2222, you can file a comment in support using this template. The deadline for comments is Monday 2/7. If you have any questions about the matter or filing at FERC specifically, reach out to Allison!
NEM 3.0 Policy Response
The policy working group tackling DER Task Force’s response to the proposed NEM 3.0 decision released by the CPUC is finalizing its written materials this week - stay tuned for the circulation of the full response in the coming weeks, when any member of the community who is interested in and comfortable with signing on will be able to do so.
ERCOT Memes
Hopefully this doesn’t trigger anyone who lived through Uri in Texas last year, but Duncan shared an incredible ERCOT meme (courtesy of Brian Bartholomew) in what is arguably the best meme format from recent memory.

What we’re reading
Canary Media’s Mike Munsell (who is also a DER Task Force member) published his predictions for energy and climate in 2022 — and the Task Force got a mention! Go check out the piece to see what else 2022 might have in store.
DERs appear to be having their moment in the spotlight. Grist published a long piece on the role DERs play in a renewable energy future that’s equitable and resilient. DER TF’s own Duncan Campbell was quoted extensively in the article and he even managed to sneak in a reference to small modular coal (not really the DERs we’re focused on at the Task Force). Also featured in the article was Task Force member and Head of Marketing at Camus Energy Steven Brisley. Check it out the article to hear more from Steven, Duncan, and other forward-thinking DERs advocates.

DER of the Month
While not technically a DER, we had to share this adorable snap of baby Kairos absolutely rocking the DER TF onesie, courtesy of Task Force member Kyle Cherrick. Got to get them on the electrification train when they’re young!
